Coffee Review: Cafe Kreyol Defense Against the Dark Arts

Coffee Review: Defense Aganist the Dark Arts

Who’s not a coffee fan? Who’s not a Harry Potter fan? Imagine the marriage of the two. The beautiful offspring is Cafe Kreyol’s Defense Against the Dark Arts. This roast is the subject of today’s coffee review.

I picked up a bag at my local health food store. It is 100% certified organic and was reasonably afordable at $13 a bag. Amazon carries it as well, at $15 a bag. You can pick up a bag here.

I’ll admit, when I try a new coffee for the first time I’m usually skeptical. I wondered if Defense Against the Dark Arts was a marketing trick targeted at all the muggles who need a morning pick me up.

I’m happy to report that I was wrong!

As I sample coffee I first normally have a cup in the morning during my poetry readings or meditation. This is to see if I enjoy the coffee’s overall affect. I’m happy to say that Defense Against The Dark Arts was a pleasant and aromatic surprise.

Second, I make a cup for rating. Often this comes the next day. As the espresso poured in my cup a milk chocolate aroma greeted the room. The smell was fantastic.  This dark Haitian roast was robust with a buttery mouth feel. In multiple samplings I did not detect any harsh or overly acidic after taste. The main flavors are butterscotch, hazelnut, with a hint of dark chocolate. It has a medium finish and goes perfectly with some steamed milk.

If you’re in search of a cappuchino to keep Lord Voldemort a bay on a cool morning, Defense Against the Dark Arts is an excellent option.

This is hands down one of my top five coffees. The only slight handicap is the price. However, just buy it, grind it, and enjoy it. I find it worth every penny.

Outstanding!
